SUN TZU: The author of the ART OF WAR (Wu Shu). According to most accounts, Sun Tzu was a general of the State of Wu in the late sixth century B.C. Others identify him with Sun Pin, a fourth century B.C. general. His book, the ART OF WAR, is still widely studied in both Eastern and Western military academies. In it he describes the importance of tactics, espionage, morale, and willingness to yield before an opponent. His ideas were studied by Chinese military figures and the SAMURAI of JAPAN, who incorporated them into the philosophies of their countries' martial arts. (See also China article).
